Our science faculty ensures that students can access the three traditional science subjects together with other options to further extend their knowledge and options. The following subjects can be studied by the science faculty:
Students are taught science three times per week in years 7, 8 and 9. The academy follows the national curriculum and delivers lessons which stretch students to reach their full potential. The students are periodically assessed following the national curriculum and various assessments for learning techniques.
The students are set according to ability from year 9 onwards.
Science club is run every week by different science teachers. The topics covered embrace a wide range and is sure to challenge and amaze the inquisitive.
We have nine well-equipped science labs that are served by a substantial preparation room staffed by one full-time technician.
Each science lab has audio/visual equipment, including some interactive whiteboards, gas taps, sinks and plenty of space and equipment for practical science.
Students will require the following equipment as a minimum for their science lessons:
Overview
Science provides students with an understanding of how our world works, what it is made up from and how this impacts every single individual and piece of matter. Through learning about science, students will gain key skills in analysis, problem-solving, and thinking about their world in new ways, all of which are skills that can be transferred to other areas of learning and life.
Key Stage 3
All students at Key Stage 3 have a minimum of four timetabled science lessons, all designed to provide a variety of challenging and interesting activities, whilst fully utilising the specialist practical equipment available. Our scheme of work incorporates all of the key elements of the Key Stage 3 National Strategy for Science and includes practical activities, skills, how science works, and investigation skills.
Key Stage 4
Students continue their studies in science in a variety of pathways depending on ability and exam capability. There are two GCSE options, either Triple Science or Combined Science – Triology, each of which include elements of biology, chemistry and physics.
Students will cover topics such as the following:
Biology
• cell biology • organisation • infection and response • bioenergetics • homeostasis and response • inheritance, variation and evolution • ecology
Chemistry
• atomic structure • the periodic table • bonding, structure and the properties of matter • quantitative chemistry • chemical changes • energy changes • rate and extent of chemical change • organic chemistry • chemical analysis • chemistry of the atmosphere • using resources
Physics
• energy • electricity • particle model of matter • atomic structure • forces • waves • magnetism and electromagnetism
Key Stage 5
Students who wish to study a science subject at post-16 have a number of choices through the Hucknall Sixth Form Centre. The three traditional sciences – biology, chemistry and physics – are all offered at A-Level, and there is also a BTEC in Medical Science.

Overview
Health and social care is an exciting and highly thought-provoking course ideal for students aiming to progress towards further education and careers in the sector. The course covers theory and practical applications in this field, and there are opportunities for you to enhance your understanding through learning in context and with external speakers.
Key Stage 5
During the course, students will study six units designed to develop their knowledge and skills:
• building positive relationships • health, safety and security • anatomy and physiology • equality, diversity and rights • nutrition • psychology
