Character education in PACE

Character education is about ensuring all out students understand the values and vision behind our ARCH values and how in their PE, Music and Drama lessons we structure lessons to ensure we model these values.

Here’s how each value can be fostered:

1. Aspiration (Striving for Excellence)

•          Encourage students to set personal and group goals for performance and skill improvement.

•          Encourage students to challenge themselves and push beyond their limits. Not settling for the easiest option – challenging themselves to achieve more and do better. Teach the value of consistent practice and perseverance.

•          Introduce students to inspirational athletes/musicians/performers who overcame adversity and challenges to achieve success.

•          Use growth mindset language (e.g., "You haven't mastered it yet"). This is done in all activities in all year groups

2. Respect (For Self, Others, and Rules)

•          Encourage active listening and appreciation. Teach and enforce sportsmanship.

•          Promote inclusive participation, valuing all skill levels in all activities

•          Show respect for equipment, facilities, and safety rules.

•          Promote respect for different perspectives and cultures.

  • Encourage students to respect their peers' performances by giving constructive feedback.

3. Compassion (Empathy and Support/Emotional connection)

•          Encourage teamwork and supporting peers. Discuss how sport, music and drama can express emotions and bring people together.

•          Provide opportunities for peer coaching and mentoring.  Encourage students to support each other in learning and performing.

•          Address bullying and any discrimination. Include songs and scripts which promote messages of kindness and empathy in the curriculum. Encourage students to explore characters in drama with different backgrounds and emotions.

•          Use activities that develop trust and cooperation, such as group and ensemble work.

•          Create a safe space where students feel comfortable expressing vulnerability.

 

4. Humility (Grace in Victory and Defeat, Success and Learning)

•          Model graciousness in winning and losing; celebrate effort, not just results; receive compliments and constructive criticism.

•          Encourage self-reflection—what went well and what can improve? In all activities

•          Teach that even the best continue to learn and grow. Learning is continuous.

•          Discuss famous examples of humility in sports, music and drama.

•          Display Christianity in sport.

•          Indoor PowerPoints that show difference and challenges that individuals overcome

5. Wisdom (Making Good Choices)

•          Teach strategic thinking in games and sports, thoughtful interpretation of music and deeper meanings behind characters, themes and scripts in drama.

•          Discuss healthy lifestyle choices

•          Reflect on the importance of fair play and ethics, cultural appreciation and any social impact.

•          Encourage critical listening, analysing different performances and styles. Encourage students to analyse and adjust their own performance.

6. Service (Helping Others)

•          Organise peer coaching or “buddy” activities.

•          Engage in community service and organise charity events.

•          Encourage students to lead activities/mentor to develop leadership skills.

•          Promote team spirit and collective success rather than individual glory.

  • Create projects where students use sport, music or drama to convey positive messages and address social issues.
  • Discuss how theatre, music and sport are used for therapy, wellbeing and education.
