The academy recognises the importance of both academic progress of our students and the role we play in preparing them for ‘life in all its fullness’. As such, part of our role in that preparation is ensuring we promote and reinforce the five British values of:
  • democracy
  • the rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
Below are some of the ways that we embed these values throughout National.

Democracy
Democracy is explored through subjects such as personal development, history and religious studies. We also reinforce this through democratic processes elections for head boy/girl and through student voice, house and academy council.

The rule of law
We teach students the rules and expectations of the academy alongside the value and reasons behind the laws that govern and protect us as a nation. This includes reinforcing consequences from laws being broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service emphasise this message.

Individual liberty
Students are encouraged to know their rights, responsibilities and personal freedoms through our personal development lessons and are given advice on how to exercise these safely.

Mutual respect
Respect is one of the academy’s core values. The academy promotes respect through classroom and learning environments, as well as through home group time and assemblies. Mutual respect is embraced through curriculum from the concept of ‘fair play’ in physical education, to the peer-mentoring programme that promotes mutual respect and support.

Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs
Christianity acknowledges the value of every human being regardless of gender, age, ethnic origin, creed or sexual orientation. The Christian faith is our starting point and the beliefs and practices of other faiths will be valued and respected. We demonstrate this by our mission statement, and religious studies curriculum, which explores different faiths, religions and cultures. Diversity is explored across the curriculum and we run a number of trips abroad throughout the academic year, as well as organising European languages week, and linking with local and international charities.
